NVIDIA Linux 7174

Looks like somebody loves us. It took a while for 7167 to come out, but almost no time at all for 7174. This includes x86 and x86_64, as well as the FreeBSD version. Go hit up the downloads here. Sorry, but I don't have any benchmarks or experience with these for you. I haven't actually been using nvidia drivers for some time now (had some bad crashing under the 5xxx line). As usual, the official feedback forums are over at nV News.net.

For those of you looking to put your new drivers to good use, Oddlabs has recently announced that Tribal Trouble has gone gold. There is a free demo, or you can buy the game for $25. Having played it myself, I can safely say that it is quite a fun game from a small group of students, and is a great example of what kind of gaming Linux can get. It also plays on Windows, if you feel so inclined.

A Little About Reading Blogs

Well, now that you've found this blog, you'll want to keep reading it (reading Adam's blogs are bound to be the highlight of your days), but how exactly is the best way to read a blog? The traditional way would be to use bookmarks (or "favo(u)rites" if your on Internet Explorer). This was how I used to do my own web browsing, back when I was doing the FvForces thing. I had a list of about 15 news sites that I would go to, reading up on all the latest in the computing world. This was, unfortunately, highly inefficient. I would end up spending my days just going through my bookmark list, checking to see if anything new had come up (kind of like those people who sit at work hitting F5 on the Slashdot page all day long). Then I found out about news aggregators. These are basically programs that take a page, check it at set intervals, and show all your favourite pages in one program all at the same time. This, combined with XML (rdf, rss, atom, etc), and there arrived some very powerful programs to do all your news aggregation for you. Just pop open one window, scan the list of "feeds" to see if there is anything new since you last checked, and you are back to work. I found myself saving a large amount of my time, because I would spend less time clicking bookmarks, and letting automation do the job for me. So, in the end, if I were to suggest any way to read this page, it would not be with a webbrowser, but with a news aggregator. If you are wondering about a good program, I can only point you towards Sourceforge.net. For Windows, I once used Feedreader, and found it to be a good program. If you are on Linux, may I suggest Liferea. Then you get the program pointed to this page, and your set! Alas, I must go, have some cake, and eat it too, as it is Ian Coons' birthday. Happy B-Day Ian!

Blog it up!

I've run several different web sites in my time. One was mikee-mikee.com, another was fvforces.net. Right now, I don't really have a good website, unless you really want to hit up 128.189.145.89, but who does? Besides, that site will be going down once I move out of residence. I had put some serious thought into doing my own blog, server and all (that's more my style), but I don't have a good host for my machine, and ip addresses are still kind of iffy to use when trying to maintain a webpage. Google is usually a good company, so I figured I'd try them out for the blogging. We'll see how it works out in the end. Hopefully, Google is as cool as I think they are.
